Anthropic published an update on October 12, 2026 describing defenses against campaigns that extract Claude’s reasoning and use it to train other models without permission. The company estimates that the amount of reasoning data harvested on its platform fell by about 90 to 99 percent after the new controls were applied. This is an early, vendor-reported estimate rather than an independent audit. Enterprises using Claude at scale should review preserved-thinking behavior, request blocking, billing for blocked requests and the way accounts are separated across APAC markets.

What Anthropic means by a distillation attack

Model distillation can be a legitimate technique when a developer trains a smaller version of its own model. Anthropic’s report concerns unauthorised campaigns that collect large volumes of responses and reasoning traces to reproduce another model’s capabilities. Attackers may distribute similar requests across many accounts and inference providers, which makes each request look less unusual in isolation.

Reasoning traces are more useful for this purpose than final answers because they contain the steps that lead to an answer. Anthropic initially reduced exposure by summarising reasoning, then added stronger controls when attackers used prompt variations and coordinated account networks to recover more detail.

Controls and measurements in the report

Anthropic describes three groups of measures. New API accounts cannot freely edit prior Claude context under the preserved-thinking design. Access to protected reasoning is restricted across models, accounts and organisations. A two-stage classifier detects extraction attempts, while repeated attempts can lead to stricter limits or account suspension.

Language-neutral view of repeated API traffic being separated from ordinary request flows
Large automated workloads need identifiable accounts, bounded retry rules and audit records that distinguish legitimate operations from abuse.

The company reports a false-positive rate below 0.1 percent for the classifier. Since September 24, 2026, it has resumed charging for requests blocked in defense areas where it reports this low false-positive rate. Anthropic estimates that extracted reasoning tokens on its own platform fell by a factor of 10 to more than 100, which it summarises as a reduction of roughly 90 to 99 percent.

Possible effects on legitimate enterprise integrations

A low false-positive rate is still material for very large workloads. Repetitive evaluation prompts, attempts to expose hidden reasoning, frequent account changes or uncontrolled retries may trigger blocks and limits. Anthropic also says preserved thinking required some developers to update integrations.

Each service account should have a named owner, documented purpose and expected traffic range. Engineering and FinOps teams need a shared view of request volume, error codes, blocked-request rates, retry counts and cost changes, because a traffic policy change can appear first as an operational or billing anomaly rather than a security alert.

Implications for AI search and agent operations

Search agents and content monitoring systems often read many documents and submit similarly structured questions. That pattern does not make them distillation systems, but fragmented ownership and rotating credentials make legitimate activity harder to explain. Keep API keys separate by project, record approved models and retry limits, and retain the business purpose for recurring evaluation sets.

When a third-party platform or agency calls Claude on behalf of a company, the contract should identify the inference provider, account owner, incident contact and route for challenging a block. APAC headquarters also need to know whether local teams in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Australia are using direct Anthropic access, cloud resellers or another vendor, since enforcement and billing evidence may arrive through different channels.

Checks for regulated and high-volume teams

Large groups should inventory accounts across subsidiaries and markets. Hospitals need to separate synthetic evaluation data from clinical information and preserve access records. Commerce teams should determine whether catalogue analysis, review summarisation and customer-service agents share credentials, because a retry storm in one workload can affect another.

Procurement documents should cover charges for blocked requests, false-positive escalation and a continuity procedure if an account is suspended. The announcement shows that model-provider defenses can require customer integration changes and alter costs, so security, engineering, finance and procurement should review the update together.

Anthropic also states the limits of its findings: more persistent attackers may adapt, and the durability of the current reduction is unknown. Enterprises should treat the 90 to 99 percent figure as the provider’s present estimate and compare it with their own logs for changes in blocks, latency and cost.
