Google Expands Source Links in AI Mode and AI Overviews: An APAC Publisher Checklist

Google is moving inline links higher in AI answers, testing a dedicated official-site section and expanding timely article carousels. APAC teams should review official destinations, source identity and local availability.

Google announced on October 15, 2026 that AI Mode and AI Overviews will surface more visible routes to the web. Inline links will appear higher in answers more often, a dedicated section for official websites is being tested, and timely article carousels are expanding to more locations and languages. Preferred Sources can be highlighted in those carousels. Google did not announce a new GEO markup or a guaranteed placement mechanism, so APAC teams should focus on clear official destinations, current evidence and accurate market-specific pages.

What is changing in Google AI Search?

Inline links connect words or phrases inside an AI response to a source page. Google says it has increased their presence and is launching changes that place them higher in responses more frequently. This can shorten the path from a generated explanation to the original source.

Google is also testing a dedicated section near the top of an AI response when only one or two official websites can complete a task or provide exact information. Each link may include context explaining why it is useful. The announcement describes a test, not universal treatment for every navigational or transactional query.

What changes for news and publisher sites?

Prominent carousels for timely articles are beginning to roll out to additional locations and languages globally. A user’s Preferred Sources can be highlighted inside them. Google is also making related-article links at the end of some AI answers larger and more visual through thumbnails and a more clickable design.

Google is adding more visible routes to original sources, but the update does not guarantee inclusion or clicks for any site.

If your regional teams publish corporate news, check whether the visible article states the publisher, event date, affected market, product name and scope of the change. Updating the date alone will not create fresh reporting. Corrections and later developments should be recorded on the original page so readers can distinguish the first announcement from the current position.

How Preferred Sources fits the update

Preferred Sources lets a user select sites they want to see more often. Google brought it into AI Overviews and AI Mode earlier in 2026, and now says those sources can stand out in timely article carousels. Google reports that the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown by more than sevenfold since the start of the year; this is Google’s own measurement.

Teams using a Preferred Sources button should test the domain deep link and the return path after selection. A preference does not make every article eligible for every query. Indexing, Search policies, content quality and relevance still apply.

Preparing official task destinations across APAC

Start with pages that complete a clear action: contact, booking, applications, store locations, pricing, policies, product support or safety notices. The title, H1, visible copy and destination action should describe the same task. Critical details should not exist only inside images or modal windows.

Regional headquarters often have overlapping global and local pages. Decide which page is authoritative for each market and language, then keep legal entity names, contact details and effective dates aligned. Korea requires checks across local business and hospital pages; Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Australia may use different domains, service coverage and transaction terms, even when the corporate brand is shared.

Does this require new schema or GEO tags?

Google’s current documentation says that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical eligibility requirement. A page must be indexed, eligible for a Search snippet and compliant with the usual technical and content policies. Existing Search quality systems remain relevant.

Do not invent an official-website schema or an AI citation tag from this announcement. Use structured data that matches the page, such as Organization, Article, Product or LocalBusiness, and keep it consistent with visible content. Ownership, contact routes, update dates and geographic scope should also be clear to a human visitor.

Can every publisher claim a Search profile?

Google has started testing clickable creator and publisher names in AI Mode video results, linking to Search profiles. As of October 16, the help page lists Canada, India and the United States as the available countries for creating a profile. It also requires at least 10,000 followers or subscribers on one supported social or video platform.

Most APAC organisations should not treat profile creation as a region-wide action yet. Keep website, YouTube and social names, bios and destination URLs consistent while monitoring country eligibility. Google also states that creating a Search profile does not directly affect ranking.

How should teams monitor the rollout?

Use task-based queries rather than a brand name alone. Examples include “official repair request”, “book a Seoul branch appointment”, “latest product safety notice” and “this week’s product update”. Record the link position, link description, destination and whether the page actually completes the task.

Rollout evidence should include country, language, device and signed-in state. The official-site section is a test, while article carousels are expanding by location and language. A missing treatment on one query is not proof of a technical error.

The update changes how source links can appear inside AI answers. The practical response is to maintain a clear official destination and verifiable current information, not to manufacture more links or near-duplicate pages.

LeadGenLab’s GEO and AEO services review which pages appear for task-based query groups and how Google describes each destination. Global teams can define a Korea-first or wider APAC review through the project contact.
